Ben Chilwell reacts after joining Chelsea on a five-year contract

England international Ben Chilwell has expressed his delight after making the switch to Chelsea from fellow Premier League side Leicester City. The left-back was on the radar of Frank Lampard since the beginning of the year and the Blues finally landed his signature after agreeing on an initial fee of £50m with the Foxes.

He has now put pen-to-paper on a five-year contract with the west London outfit and is looking forward to working with the young and dynamic squad at Stamford Bridge, he told the club’s official website: “I am delighted to be joining Chelsea at this very exciting time for the club. I’m looking forward to being a part of this young, dynamic squad led by Frank Lampard as we challenge for honours next season. I can’t wait to get started and hopefully it won’t be long before we’re playing in front of the Chelsea fans at Stamford Bridge.”

Chilwell joins the Blues after previously spending his entire career at Leicester. The 23-year-old has had some criticism over his performances over the years and judging by the reaction across social media, he was definitely not the first choice among the Blues supporters. Nonetheless, there have been messages of support with the defender having joined the club and it remains to be seen whether he can cement his position in the starting lineup.
Chilwell is expected to miss the start of the 2020/21 league campaign as he has yet to recover from the heel injury suffered at Leicester City in July. He needs another three weeks of rehabilitation before resuming first-team training and may not make his debut for the Blues until early October. He becomes the club’s third major signing of the transfer window after Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner, who joined from Ajax and RB Leipzig respectively.
