STILL CONFIDENT
The Chelsea manager Rafa Benitez has said that he is still confident that the team can win the title this season, despite going seven points behind the leaders Manchester United.
Chelsea have been extremely poor in all competitions since the 4-2 win over Tottenham. Up until that moment, they were top of the league by four points. However, since then, they have managed just two victories in the 10 matches. This has led to the club sacking the manager Roberto di Matteo, and appointing the former Liverpool man Rafa Benitez in his place. However, he has been unable to help the club get their first victory for what feels like a long time.
Benitez has been in charge of the Chelsea team for the last two 0-0 draws against Manchester City and Fulham. The draw with Fulham saw Chelsea drop seven points behind the leaders and they remain in the third position. Benitez, who has never won the Premier league title, has said that he still remains confident that the club can overcome this deficit in the remainder of the season. Clubs that are usually way behind the top of the table during Christmas never make up the deficit in the second half of the season.
"It's still a long way to go. We have to keep going. We'll have chances. Remember last season when Manchester City were ahead and it was [perceived as being] easy. Then they needed to win their last game. It's a long, long competition. Maybe from my point of view, but I was just concentrating on the game," said Benitez after the match. Benitez decided to rest key players like Juan Mata and Mikel for this match. He said that it was necessary to keep them fresh over the course of the season due to the number of games.
